5.1 Paraphrase, Summarize, Quote
Due by the deadline posted in the Schedule and shared with your instructor in Google Docs.
One of the key components of the formal report is incorporating sources from the research you have located. You may still be locating additional sources (i.e., not sources from the Week Three activity or the Week Four Proposal). You can choose the best sources for your report.
To practice how to effectively incorporate sources in this activity, we will practice summary, paraphrase, and quotation.
First, read Appendix A (pp. 427-434) in the textbook, paying particular attention to the differences between summary, paraphrase, and quotation and to understand why you should document your sources.
Then, summarize five of the secondary sources that you have located in your research. For each source, do the following:

- cite your source using MLA or APA.
- summarize the key points from the source.
- paraphrase one of the main points of the source in your own words.
- directly quote one line from the source you believe is important to your report.
Think About It
Audience Awareness:
Keep in mind both your primary audience for your final report (the person to whom you are directly writing) and your secondary audience (your professor). Both of these audiences will require clear, edited writing that follows the primary technical writing conventions (clear, concise, fluent, and personable as noted in Chapter 7). You want your audiences to know that you understand and can effectively incorporate your sources into your final report.
Information Literacy:
In Week Three, you located reliable sources for the proposal. You will now further review those sources and/or additional sources you have located to identify the parts that are most relevant to your final report. This activity will prepare you to document sources in the text of your report correctly (you will want to review how to document sources in the text of a document according to the documentation style you select--MLA on pp. 434-435 or APA on pp. 446-447). The activity will also prepare you for writing the body of the report in Week Seven.
Digital Literacy:
At this point, you will have completed several documents using Google Docs and submitted them to me. You will continue to use this program as a means to collaborate with your professor on this document in order to make these annotations as clear as possible for the final report.
